Cummins showcases the H2 IC engine for off-road applications
Cummins has previewed its B6.7H hydrogen internal combustion engine at a series of industry events, which is part of the company's fuel-independent engine series. However, at Intermat 2024, engine and power Oems will introduce a new H2 IC engine version, which has undergone specific modifications to support off-road applications.
The peak power/torque output of the engine is 216 kW/1200 Nm. The changes cover a series of newly developed components for heavy-duty working cycles, and the engine peripheral equipment has also been upgraded to make it more robust in harsh environments.
Laurent Di Vito, the sales manager for Cummins France's application and production engines, said that all variants of the B6.7 engine series are planned to be launched between 2026 and 2027, which may be in line with the new Stage 6 emission regulations. He pointed out that since they use the same platform, customers will be able to install the engine that is most suitable for their specific work/workplace, and only minor changes to the engine compartment are needed to switch from diesel power to hydrogen power.
"The Cummins platform supports machine integration," he said, and went on to explain that once a machine is designed to use Cummins' agnostic platform, it can use any version of the series.
In addition to this new off-road model of B6.7H ICE, Cummins will also showcase its new NProxx hydrogen fuel storage system. In order to deliver H2 fuel to the machine equipped with H2 ICE and fuel cells, the storage tank stores the fuel at a pressure of 700 bar and distributes it at a pressure of 10 bar. Storage tanks can be installed at remote sites, then removed for refilling, and then returned to that location.
